Mayor questions drought-proofing policy
13 July 2006
The Toowoomba Mayor says the state Opposition's plan to drought-proof the city raises more questions than answers.
The policy calls for new bores, piping water from coal seam gas mines and irrigators west of Toowoomba and a new dam at Emu Creek.
Snow Manners, who is opposed to recycling effluent for human consumption, says the policy will help undecided voters make up their minds ahead of this month's water poll.
"What we hear on the street is that people want to see options and this is their opportunity to have a look at them," she said.
But Toowoomba Mayor Di Thorley says she has concerns about sourcing water from mines and irrigators.
"Would it have to go into a dam or would we put a treatment plant out at Norwin and then pump it into town?" she said.
She says the council has already begun the process of drilling new bores around the city.

What is Mayor Thorley's concern?
That she won't get to build her recycled sewage plant and keep her US company friends happy?
There is clearly no need to put a treatment plant at Norwin. The water can be piped to Toowoomba for treatment with all Toowoomba's other water.
It's a sensible water solution for Toowoomba, providing Toowoomba with water 5 years before her floundering Water Futures project.
Mayor Thorley will no doubt try to attack the Qld Coalition's plan.
But she's fast running out of time. She has long since run out of sensible comments ...

Since when has Thorley ever had any sensible comments?
