Qld Gas water going ahead ...

Interesting comments on WIN News last night.

Interview with Richard Cottee, MD of Qld Gas Corp. Making good progress with implementing the gas water scheme in Chinchilla.

Good example of a progressive Council looking at the best water option - it would be environmentally stupid just to let this water evaporate ...

for progress on the gas water scheme.

An innovative scheme worthy of support from both the State and Federal governments.

How is it "environmentally stupid" to jsut let this water evaporate?

A by-product of the extraction of gas from coal seams is water.

There is a vast (20 year) supply of potable water (once treated) available for use in drought-proofing a number of towns in Qld.

Clearly it would be reckless to allow this water to evaporate rather than using it for other purposes.

At least Chinchilla and Dalby recognise the benefit of harnessing this type of water.

And where soes it leave those towns in 20 years when this water supply is exhasted?

ok - so we should let the water evaporate because it might run out in 20 years (assuming no more gas deposits are found and assuming it never rains again).

With thinking like that you should be on the Council!

It has nothing to do with the gas deposits or the water that is associated with those deposits; there is plenty of gas out there. It has to do with securing future gas customers do purchase the gas.

The water will only be available whilst the fields are being developed, and as such even the gas companies have given themselves a 20 year horizon for development. If the demand for gas declines through alternative energy sources, and this is likely, then there will be no further development of the fields.

It would become a very expensive exercise to mind the gas and flare it off for the sake of accessing the water, and not very environmentally friendly.

Well that's good news.

There's plenty of gas - so there's plenty of water.

QGC is confident of gas contracts - so is Arrow Energy.

As far as alternative energy sources are concerned, should we revert to coal? Gas is seen as a major component of future energy generation.

The gas water approach is an innovative use of a natural resource and would be promoted as such if the Toowoomba City Council and the State Government weren't so obsessed with trying to introduce recycled sewage for drinking in Toowoomba, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

I would have loved to have been on the marketing trips arranged by the water recycling companies - must have been some good wining and dining and ego stroking.

I'd much rather the 20 year timeframe on the gas water than take my chances with the Mayor's proposal - in 20 years time, we may find out it isn't as safe as she says it is. And she won't be around to take the blame.

What about the CSIRO vegetable disaster - for 10 years they experimented with genetically modified vegetables. Then they fed them to mice and they died. Oops.

Gas water is one of our answers and we have good people fighting for these projects for us. Get behind them and explain to all who will listen that we do not need to depend on reclaimed sewage water!!
