Water fines shoot up ...

From the Courier Mail:

South East Queensland residents are being slugged double the previous fines for breaking water restrictions, and corporations face new $750 fines, under increased penalties introduced without warning over the Christmas holiday season.

The new $150 fine for water users took effect on December 16, without any announcement or warning from local councils, after the State Government approved the move.

The more rainwater tanks that are installed, the less income from water rates. Expect water rates to be hiked.

From the Toowoomba City Council website:

Fines double under new penalties for water use breaches

Residents and businesses breaching water restrictions face much harsher penalties under new State Government regulations.

The fine for a person’s first breach of water restrictions has doubled to $150. For the first time Councils can issue increased penalties for subsequent breaches.

Water and Sewerage Portfolio Chair Cr Joe Ramia said individuals now face a $225 fine and $300 fine for second and third offences respectively, if the infringement occurs within two years of the first offence.

“Under the new regulations businesses are in a separate category to individuals and are liable for heftier fines. A first infringement will cost business $750, the second infringement $1125 and third infringement $1500.”

A person or business taking water from a fire fighting system or fire hydrant without permission or for other than fire fighting purposes, is liable to a penalty of $375.

Cr Ramia said the new regulations are designed to encourage greater compliance of water restrictions in Queensland.

“As we approach Level 5 water restrictions in Toowoomba, people need to become more aware of just how critical the water situation really is.”
