Labor and Thorley fail to sink options

Water options for Toowoomba will not go away as easily as Premier Beattie and Mayor Thorley wish.

Yesterday’s media statements by the Mayor and Premier do not undermine the viability of the Queensland Coalition’s $100 million options package announced on Wednesday, according to Coalition Candidate for Toowoomba North, Lyle Shelton.

The Premier’s release of a report by consultants Parsons Brinkerhoff compare options that are not even on the table.

“Premier Beattie is costing a different scheme that involves double the infrastructure,” Mr Shelton said.

The Coalition’s proposal involves a commercial leasing arrangement with Norwin farmers, not a swap as detailed in the PB report.

The PB report does not address the lease option announced on Wednesday, which can deliver 5000 megalitres to Toowoomba within months for $5 million less to the ratepayer than Water Futures.

Provide it rains and there is water to recycle, Water Futures cannot produce water until 2011-2013.

PB on its own admission only did a “desk top” analysis of the coal seam gas water option. This is hardly proof of its unviability.

The Coalition has pledged $60 million towards a coal seam gas water scheme to Toowoomba with the balance funded by the Federal Government and the gas companies.

The gas companies know that there will be a community backlash when people realise they are wasting thousands of megalitres each year of water produced as a by-produced of their mining operations.

“If drinking recycled sewage water is the only viable option for Toowoomba, it is the only viable option for Brisbane,” Mr Shelton said.

“But the State Government is spending $2.9 billion so that other southeast Queenslanders don’t have to drink recycled sewage water. Toowoomba deserves a fair go.”

By putting forward these silly rubbery figures on the OTHER OPTIONS they have succeeded to highlight the fact that there are other options.
Silly state of affairs isn't it??
The people of Toowoomba are smarter than that.
I would have also thought that a lady like Ida Kendrick would have been smarter than her statement in the Council add reveals in Saturday's Chronicle.
Either she is simply lying ,or she really think that the hose will be turned on if she votes for the Water Futures plan.
Well Ida the only way you and we are going to do that is from the sky. You know rain and the dams have to be 40% full, if you don't believe me then ask Kev Flanagan.
