The Chronicle:

Ex rural councillor eyes city hall post

8 November 2008

Nominations for councillor in the by-election closed at noon yesterday with Ian Keleher getting in at lucky number 13.

However, Mr Keleher was drawn out as number one for the ballot paper.

Mr Keleher was a councillor on the Clifton Shire Council for three terms during 1992 until 2001.

“I was chairman of water and sewage when Nobby got its town water tower. It was a very big highlight in my career as a councillor,” he said.

Mr Keleher, now 55, was a grain farmer and sold his farm at Felton and moved to Pittsworth in 2004.

Now “semi-retired” he said he has “all the time in the world” to go back to local politics.

“I've certainly got the experience and I'm the type of person who listens to people and gets along well with people,” Mr Keleher said.

The vacancy on the Toowoomba Regional Council was created by the sudden death of Cr Ian Orford.

The final list of nominees include Ian Orford's nephew Grant Orford and former Toowoomba City councillors Sue Englart, Graham Barron and Michele Alroe.

Former Clifton mayor Ian Jones is also vying for a role as councillor, but there's no Snow Manners who also was a mayoral hopeful earlier this year.

“I had the opportunity to stand for councillor at the previous election, but I chose not to and my position still stands on that,” Mr Manners said yesterday.

Voters across the region will be required to lodge a postal vote by 6pm on Saturday, December 6.

Ballot papers will be mailed to all electors on the electoral roll later this month.

Electors will receive the ballot paper, detailed voting instructions, a declaration envelope in which to place their ballot paper and a reply-paid envelope for posting their vote to the returning officer. Votes will be anonymous with the returning officer marking the elector's name off the electoral roll and tearing off the identifier strip.

The poll result will be declared once there is a clear margin between the leading candidates.
