Qld LNP - State election is a referendum on drinking recycled water ...

Excerpt from Sydney Morning Herald:

Qld's LNP takes stand on recycled water

7 November 2008

The Queensland opposition says it wants voters to consider next year's state election as a referendum on drinking recycled water.

Liberal National Party (LNP) infrastructure spokeswoman Fiona Simpson said the party was opposed to government plans to pump recycled and treated effluent into south-east Queensland's drinking supply.

Work is well advanced on the pipeline between southern Queensland dams and treatment plants to boost water supplies.

Ms Simpson said the LNP's policy for the 2009 election would be to use recycled water only for power stations, industry and some agriculture.

Its introduction to the drinking supply should only be a last resort, she said.

"There is a lot of legitimate concern over the long term effects and safety of drinking recycled sewage, hospital and industrial waste water and people deserve to have a say on the matter," Ms Simpson said.

"The Bligh government plans to force the south-east into drinking this waste water, but the LNP are giving people the guarantee that recycled water won't be placed into drinking supplies unless absolutely necessary."

She said the issue was one of the defining differences between the two parties.

The government has expert advice that the recycled water meets international health standards.

See - Next election to be about recycled water.

Anna Bligh's polling will be showing that a majority of people in SEQ do not want to drink recycled water.

So she faces a tough sell or a backdown before the next State election.

As has been said before, why the rush to pour recycled water into Wivenhoe dam ...

Drinking recycled water will come down to the vote

Placing recycled water into drinking supplies will come down to the vote at the next state election, the LNP said today.

LNP Infrastructure spokeswoman Fiona Simpson said the LNP had a clear policy on recycled water, stating it should be directed towards power, industry and appropriate agriculture, and only placed in drinking supplies as an absolute last resort.

"There is a lot of legitimate concern over the long term effects and safety of drinking recycled sewerage, hospital and industrial waste water and people deserve to have a say on the matter," Ms Simpson said.

"The Bligh Government plans to force the south-east into drink this waste water, but the LNP are giving people the guarantee that recycled water won't be placed into drinking supplies unless absolutely necessary.

"People will be given a say over drinking recycled water in the 2009 state election when they choose between the LNP or Labor. This matter is one of the defining differences between the two parties.

"The Beattie-Bligh Government uses experts who claim recycled water is safe, but they are also deliberately ignoring other experts who have doubts over its safety.

"People's health is too precious to gamble by ignoring these scientific concerns.

"South-east residents clearly don't want to drink recycled water unless there is no other option. If Queenslanders choose to elect an LNP Government at the next election then they can rest assured recycled water won't be placed into drinking supplies."

Ms Simpson said the Beattie-Bligh Government went to the 2006 election saying recycled water would only be placed into dams in an "Armageddon" situation.

Anna Bligh also announced in a 2006 radio interview that the Government was "well on track to secure water supplies without drinking recycled water."

"Despite dams being above 40% and forecasts of a good wet season ahead, Labor has clearly back flipped on their election promises," Ms Simpson said.

So if Labor lose all SEQ seats but still retain power what will happen?

It's sewage water not sewerage. The sewage flows along the sewerage pipes!

Would it not be lovely if it lost all its seats - everywhere. There are thousands upon thousands of Labor voters who do not accept this recycled water for drinking

They are now going to pass laws to fire Councillors - not toeing the line - what a breed of monsters we have in the State government

Really the government should not worry - they have over 70% support for recycled water, they wish - all their lies will come home to roost

Yes, some will change their minds because of the incompetency of Bligh or because they think that the LNP won't put recycled sewage into the dams. But others are hard core labor voters who won't change their minds. They are the same people who kept voting labor even after Keating's recession we had to have. And they have kept voting labor in Qld even though the government lurches from one disaster to another. There is a core group of labor voters and liberals as well who you will never ever budge no matter how bad things get. That's politics.

Water is the basic necessity of life - somebody trying to experiment on me or my family - would change my vote - I would even vote for Rudd.

Really I guess if they do not change their vote - the water is made for them - maybe Anna then knows it is not an issue
