Southeast Queensland councils are seeking $6 billion in compensation from the state government for a takeover of their water assets - $4 billion more than what is on offer.
The region's Council of Mayors today demanded the "fair compensation" following an independent valuation of the infrastructure.
The state government in May announced plans to take over the water assets of south-east councils as part of major water reforms.
Former premier Peter Beattie had agreed to compensate them up to $2 billion.
