Greener machine to flush Geelong's sewers

27 September 2007

The amount of water used to clean Geelong's sewers has been cut by 96 per cent.

Bartlett's Waste Management recently bought the new combination recycling unit - the only one of its kind in Victoria - and has been using it to clean some of Barwon Water's sewer mains for the past month.

The new unit uses about 4200 litres of water a day to jet and clean the sewer mains as opposed to the 105,000 litres used by a standard unit.

Bartlett's managing director Darren Bartlett said the recycling unit used new electronic and filtration technology which enabled water from the sewer main to be treated and re-used in the jetting process.

``The new unit has been very effective in cutting the amount of water we use to clean the mains, which is important for long-term environmental and business sustainability,'' Mr Bartlett said.
