Councils opt for polls

5 August 2007

Councils across Queensland are sidestepping a threat by the State Government to sack them for running referendums on forced amalgamations.

By running opinion polls or surveys, rather than formal referendums, they believe they have found a loophole that keeps them on the right side of the law.

About a dozen councils which would be affected by the mergers sent surveys to their ratepayers on Friday and more are expected to follow.

Cabinet okays council reform, despite outrage

6 August 2007

Queensland's Cabinet has accepted all of the Local Government Reform Commission's boundary recommendations, despite outrage on the coast and in the bush.

The Local Government Reform Implementation Bill 2007 – which will cut the state's 156 councils to 72 – will be introduced to parliament tomorrow.

Premier Peter Beattie said the government hoped to pass the legislation by the end of the month.

"I know this is difficult, but this is good for Queensland and we have to persist with it, because if we don't, then we will not have councils that can cope with the growth that this state is facing," he told reporters in Brisbane today.

Well done people - do not let one little mad emperor try to push you round - just because he surrounds himself with Brisbanites who do not know what is going on.

One thing is clear with amalgamation, recycled water for drinking and a dictatorship in charge it will eventually scare people away from Queensland

Minister linked to clinic 'scam'

7 August 2007

STATE Government minister Andrew Fraser has been caught up in an alleged scam involving the recruitment of overseas-trained doctors.

Mr Fraser wrote a letter in 2005 urging Queensland's chief health officer to "appropriately and efficiently" assess a series of applications for a group known as Health For All.

The group was purportedly establishing community medical centres, including one at Toowong in Brisbane, which would be staffed by international medicos.

But the group has become mired in accusations that it solicited loans for the medical centres from an unwitting victim based on allegedly fake documents.

In Brisbane District Court documents, Brisbane woman Maria Coop has alleged she is owed about $120,000 that she lent to Health For All's Jorge Rodriguez.

Federal Nationals candidate for the seat of Forde, Hajnal Ban, who is helping Ms Coop try to retrieve her allegedly missing money, said the matter needed urgent investigation and Mr Fraser should explain what action he took when told of problems with Health For All.

Ms Ban also called on Premier Peter Beattie to stand Mr Fraser aside until his actions were fully explained.

Mr Fraser last night would not comment about the case.
