About Me
- Name: Concerned Ratepayer
- Location: Australia
For many years, the 4350water blog has informed readers of plans by the Toowoomba City Council (now Toowoomba Regional Council) and the Qld government to introduce recycled water for drinking in Toowoomba. It has also looked at the issue from a State and Federal perspective and dealt with related State and Federal political issues. There continues to be a need for the Toowoomba Regional Council to be completely transparent in its dealings with the ratepayers and residents of Toowoomba. There also continues to be a need for open debate on the benefits and risks of potable reuse and long-term studies on the effects on humans of drinking recycled water. Coal seam gas water is emerging as a possible alternate water source for some uses for the region. The 4350water blog is a collective effort and thanks go to its many contributors.

Excerpt from the Chronicle:
Toowoomba City Council favoured as 'super' name
4 August 2007
It came as a surprise to almost everyone yesterday when councillors voted the region's new super shire be known as Toowoomba City Council.
Gathered at Toowoomba council chambers, city councillors had to decide on a name for the amalgamated council and notify the State Government by 5pm.
Minister for Local Government Andrew Fraser had been clear during his visit to Toowoomba on Tuesday: if a unanimous decision on the name for an amalgamated shire could not be reached, it would revert to Toowoomba Regional Council suggested by the Local Government Reform Commission.
Crows Nest, Rosalie, Jondaryan, Millmerran, Pittsworth, Clifton and Cambooya shires had been equally unambiguous in their desires.
All seven wanted the new shire to be known as the Darling Downs Regional Council.
But as debate on the issue began, some councillors and all members of the public were shocked to hear Deputy Mayor Joe Ramia's thoughts.
"Toowoomba is a regional centre for education, hospitals, universities, and everything that happens in and around this region is based on the city," Cr Ramia said.
"Toowoomba City Council should stay."
Four of Cr Ramia's colleagues agreed, with councillors Sue Englart, Regina Albion, Keith Beer and Graham Barron voting in the majority to keep the Toowoomba City Council name.
Although the specifics of the vote are unlikely to carry any weight with State Government, which will now almost certainly override the surrounding shires' wishes that Darling Downs Regional Council be adopted, Toowoomba councillors were determined yesterday that their reluctance to surrender the "hard fought right to call Toowoomba a city" was known.
Jondaryan Shire Council deputy mayor Ian Orford was "absolutely astounded" as he watched the councillors vote.
"I would have been happier if they'd wanted Toowoomba Regional Council, but to actually go back to Toowoomba City; how disingenuous is that?"
