Best rain in 2 years for south-east Qld
6 June 2007
The south-east Queensland water catchment has received its best rainfall in almost two years.
The water crisis is far from over but significant falls have been recorded across the south-east with more on the way.
Wivenhoe Dam has received 30 millimetres overnight, with Somerset recording 50 and North Pine 40 millimetres.
SEQ Water's Mike Foster says if the weather bureau is right, there is reason to be optimistic.
"We need a repeat of last night's rain to really start making a dint in our dam levels," he said.
The rain has brought a welcome end to water carting in the small Darling Downs town of Warra, where the local weir is now at 40 per cent capacity. There are new flows in the Condamine River, with the rain boosting the prospect for winter crops.
The wet weather played havoc for the national broadcaster in Queensland last night, interfering with ABC TV's satellite up-link from the newsroom in Brisbane.
