Dams and tanks ...

From ABC News:

Qld Govt gives dam decision six weeks

2 May 2006

The Queensland Government says it could be up to six weeks before it decides whether the proposed new dam near Gympie will go ahead.

Last week, the Government announced it would build a 660,000 megalitre dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing.

Nearly 900 properties will be affected and angry landholders have vowed to fight the proposal.

Water Minister Henry Palaszczuk says it is too early to talk about possible relocation packages for farmers because the Government is yet to make a final decision about the site.

Govt urged to encourage more water tanks

2 May 2006

The head of the Sunshine Coast's peak conservation organisation says the Queensland Government should rethink its water strategy.

Sunshine Coast Environment Council manager Ian Christiasen says if all home owners were to install water tanks it would ease the pressure on the region's current dammed water supplies.

He says it would also rule out the need for the two dams the Government has planned for the Gympie and Logan districts.

He says Premier Peter Beattie should pay higher subsidies to encourage people to install rainwater tanks.
