Federal opposition leader Kim Beazley's comments:

Mr Beazley announced a federal Labor government would develop "consistent and comprehensive national guidelines for water recycling", including for drinking water.

Public confidence in recycled water was being undermined by insufficient national guidelines for stormwater reuse or underground water storage, he said.

But Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, whose responsibility includes water, said the Government was supporting 28 water conservation projects across Australia, worth more than $1 billion.
