Compulsory or voluntary - that is the question ...

Embattled Mayor Di Thorley says she wants the referendum to be compulsory.

But has she made the right choice? Has she listened to the right people?

While one could argue that a voluntary referendum will only bring out those who oppose the Mayor's controversial recycled sewage project, making it compulsory means she forces a lot of people to turn up and vote for whom a trip to a polling booth is the last thing they want to do that day.

One of the difficulties for the NO campaign is getting the people out to vote: the Mayor may have just solved that one ...

Under the LGA 1993, voting in a poll is compulsory.

It is both , it's a referendum on the recycled sewage water and a poll on the terrible council. Most people out here can not wait to have there vote.
This is quite funny when you know that there is no guidelines governing recycled sewage water for drinking for Australians.
How come we are to vote on something that it NOT lawful yet.

It is part of the council's plan to get this plant up and running and to the people as soon as possible. Flanagan (TCC Engineer)says that the testing period is not necessary and that it was all the idea of the member for Groom Mr Ian Macfarlane. I always thought CSIRO has something to do with it. I hope they put something clear in the guidelines when they get them done.

People should be asking how can we be going to a referendum when it is not lawful to use reclaimed sewage water for drinking in Queensland or Australia.

I hope she does make it compulsory. How many people will vote NO just to get her back up for things council have done to them. Protest votes are nothing new. Just forcing people to vote would be enough for some people I know to vote NO. One recent reason for a protest vote, council installing parking meters outside businesses on the fringe of the city centre. There are hundreds of reasons. It does'nt matter, either way, a compulsory referendum or not, council can't win.

VOTE NO if you don't want to drink recycled sewage.

VOTE NO if you think the Council has lied to you.

VOTE NO if you think there are other options the Council is not examining.

VOTE NO if you think the Council buried the Water Futures project in its forward budget estimates.

VOTE NO if you think it was wrong of the Council to withhold the NWC application from the public.

VOTE NO if you think the Council will need to spend an extra $66 million on 600 hectares of evaporation ponds.

VOTE NO if you think Council misled you about people at Disneyland drinking recycled sewage.

VOTE NO if you think Council misled you about nothing but pure water getting through the membranes.

VOTE NO if you think the Council is trying to force the Water Futures project on to an unreceptive public.

VOTE NO if you think the Council will avoid testing the water and pump it to Cooby and then to your house for drinking.

VOTE NO if you think "drink it or you can buy bottled water" was the wrong attitude for the Mayor to take.

VOTE NO if you think the Council misled you about their "independent experts".

VOTE NO if you don't trust the Council.

And these only relate to the Water Futures project.

Vote no if you don't buy Thorley's scare tactics to increase rates by 2% to cover the cost of the referendum

She knows no shame.

She will keep trying to scare people until she is voted out of office.

VOTE NO if you want to get rid of Jeffy and his "a no vote means no water" comments.

For a group which said they wouldn't engage in scare tactics, that's exactly what Jeff and friends are doing.

People in Toowoomba aren't dumb enough to fall for that.

Look at the Federal government surplus. It's our money!

Vote NO if you think that being the only place in the world that recycles up to 29% of sewage for drinking will harm property prices.

Vote NO if you are tired of the Mayor spending little or no time in Toowoomba working on solving the water problems.

Vote NO to put an end to her trips around Australia publicising recycled water for the recycling companies.
