In fact only 2% of the booths are counted - the ECQ website is in error.

There will be about 730,000 votes in total as voters had ten votes each.

So far little booths like Emu Ck. Biddeston, Geham etc with about 200 voters have been counted.

The only city booth counted is Harlaxton North and it had a slightly different mix of favorites.

At this rate of counting it will be well after easter before a result is known.

The Chronicle:

Antonio keen to have 'strong say'

March 17, 2008

The anti-city councillor protest but the need to retain experience has seen country candidates surge to the fore at the Toowoomba Regional Council ballot boxes.

Spearheading the polls, topping most of the 18 counts available last night, is outgoing Millmerran mayor Paul Antonio.

The closest city councillor is former deputy mayor Joe Ramia, who is sitting ninth, with Michelle Schneider 12th.

Hot on Mr Antonio's heels are former Cambooya mayor Carol Taylor, Pittsworth mayor Ros Scotney, Cambooya deputy mayor Mike Williams, Rosalie mayor Noel Strohfeld, Jondaryan deputy mayor Ian Orford, Clifton deputy mayor Anne Glasheen and Crows Nest councillors Bill Cahill and Chris Yeates.

The only fancy without a council background is former Toowoomba financial adviser Peter Marks at 11th.

Returning officer Robyn Lowien could not provide a full list last night after the Electoral Commission Queensland website would not update after 4pm.

Ms Lowien provided the top 12 tally manually.

The website had only counts for eight booths mainly country.

Last night, she said, there were 206 votes separating eighth to 12th position.

Several of the larger city booths are yet to be counted.

Mr Antonio was not surprised as he celebrated his victory with his volunteers at the Millmerran Sports Centre.

"It hasn't happened by accident. It has happened as a result of what I would suggest was a very professional campaign with the absolute backing of my community," he said.

"There's 100 people here celebrating. They left this town on Saturday to hand out how to vote cards for Paul Antonio from Yarraman to Clifton to wherever."

He predicated his successful campaign on the success of Millmerran Shire.

"I think it (amalgamation) was a terribly emotional time for my community, but let's move on.

"There's a real opportunity now for me to have a strong say in the future of the region and I intend to give it my best shot," he said.

Mrs Taylor said she was humbled by her support which was strong from the first count of the Felton booth.

"But I'm keeping an open mind.

"I'm confident of getting in the 10, but I don't think I'll be at the top," she said.
