New laws on tap for grey-water cleaning
4 October 2007
The State Government will introduce new laws to allow councils and businesses to use treated grey water instead of drinking water to wash down roads and footpaths.
This follows an exclusive Bulletin report yesterday that revealed the Gold Coast City Council was using more than 35 million litres a year of water drawn from hydrants to fill tankers to wash malls and footpaths while residents abide by tough level 5 restrictions.
..
Earlier yesterday, Mayor Ron Clarke had said streets and footpaths should be washed with recycled water rather than precious drinking water.
...
Cr Clarke said the council had looked at using recycled water, but received 'point blank refusals' by the Environmental Protection Agency.
"We can't do anything else ... we've been repeatedly told we can't use recycled water," he said.
Queensland Water Commission chairwoman Elizabeth Nosworthy said councils should find alternative waterless methods to clean their streets.

Sewage plunge
12 October 2007
We were a touch concerned when we heard this week that James Packer had dived into a sewage plant in the curry capital of Europe.
Turns out Packer's Challenger Financial investment mob is part of a consortium that's spent about £3 billion buying the water treatment company Southern Water in England.
It appears Packer thinks there's long-term sustainable cash flow with projections of earnings growth coming as the population grows.
You know, the more people, the more, er, grey water.
It's unclear if Challenger is banking on a bit of extra growth via the British Government upping its immigration quota for Indian curry chefs.
At least now there's something more on the nose in the Packer investment stable than the Nine Network.
