How much does a referendum cost?

Comments on WIN News:

WATER RECYCLING

Referendum to cost ratepayers

The community referendum that will be held to make a decision on the Water Futures project is estimated to cost ratepayers at least a million dollars.

Toowoomba City Council is currently investigating how it will be held, as opponents fire up for a massive campaign.

See - Referendum cost.

Deputy Mayor Ramia claims the referendum will cost $1 million - maybe he can use some of the $3 million Recycled Sewage Visitors Centre funds to pay for it.

How much of ratepayers' money will be spent by Flanagan, Thorley and Ramia on the YES campaign?

Do you want your ratepayer $s spent in this way?

How come when you look up costs of the most recent referendum in Australia it is costed at $66M and our council is trying to tell us that a referendum in a small area like ours namely Toowoomba would cost $1M.
Do they think we are dumb?
This looks like an excuse to get out of having a referendum when you know you will loose.
It was also interesting to see Pure H2O will take no part in the upcoming referendum and the signatures they say they acquired are not forthcoming.

$1 million is just Ramia plucking a number out of the air - just like all his costings on the alternatives.

Do you think he runs his businesses the same way?

I have never seen such a one-sided council in my life. Everything they do seems to point to there way being the best and now they are going to overcost a referendum to try and make people feel bad about not supporting them. I cannot wait for 2008 I wish it were tomorrow so this money which incidentally is rate-payers money wouldn't needed to be wasted on a fight that TCC cannot win.

The referendum is a vote on the competence of the council.

This council should have been more upfront with the community years ago.

This referumdum should have been held with the last election. This council is wasting our money!!!

How many dual flush toilets or rain water tanks could have been subsidised with the money from that horrible glossy book put out by the council $41 000 what a waste of money. Another example of this council wasting our money.

The chronicle also don't like the article in Saturdays Courier Mail in reference to the Poowoomba article. Get used to it Toowoomba as our image has been tarnished thanks to this council. People already think we are drinking recycled sewage.

Noone has done more to tarnish the city's image than the Mayor.

No use complaining about articles written in the Courier Mail - they wouldn't be there if the mayor wasn't trying to force her project on the community!

Tranish isn't the word, if Toowoomba wasn't on the map before it is now.

I see many ways to use recycled sewage, rather then drinking it:

1. Parks and Gardens
2. Farming
3. Industry
4. Toilets in New Estates.
5. All public Toilets.

It may cost to do this, but it's a far better solution then the council's proposal.

This water should never be used for human consumption, the council need to be sacked by the Toowoomba residents.

I pitty you people.
