Councillor challenges mayoral candidates to debate
14 February 2008
Toowoomba mayoral candidate Peter Taylor says campaign debates should be planned and hosted by community organisations.
Toowoomba city councillor Snow Manners is challenging candidates, in the southern Queensland city, to a 'town hall' style forum.
Cr Manners is seeking an independent moderator and is challenging his opponents to a debate.
But Jondaryan Mayor Peter Taylor says he is unhappy about how it is being handled.
"But certainly a particular candidate organising it for his own benefit, seems to be a lot of conflict in that," he said.
But Cr Manners says there is no other opportunity for the general public to meet candidates.
Clifton Mayor Ian Jones says he is happy to debate Cr Manners anywhere and at anytime.

What is Taylor afraid of?
How can a debate of three candidates with an independent moderator have "a lot of conflict in that"?
Sounds like he wants to be nowhere near Manners' debating skills.
As for Jones, he should be wary of some of the hard questions he'd be asked on the night.
Game on ...

ps how about a real debate not just some community organisation lunch forum that Taylor wants where everyone smiles and eats their lunch and nothing is discussed.

From memory I think the Humeridge Centre will hold 2000 people and they will come but maybe Peter Taylor and Ian Jones won't have the courage to turn up.
Well the audience will have to look at 2 empty chairs!
We have had enough of Mayor Thorley and her way of not ever engaging in an open debate with the people and now it seems that Taylor and Jones will follow that line. It would seem that if they don't have a script they could be afraid to debate in public.
A reminder to Taylor and Jones that not all people can afford a $25-00 breakfast for the Chamber of Commerce and some have to be at work at that time of day.
Manners holding a meeting is a once only chance for the community to make a judgement of the 3 Mayoral candidates and hopefully get a glimpse of all other council candidates.

May the "conflict" is the conflict of interest of one candidate organising an "impartial" debate? And as was said above, 800 people (out of 150,000) turning out for "their" candidate? What's the point of that sort of debate? Who would it sway? If 2000 people came they would all walk out supporting the same candidates they walked in supporting.

The point is that Taylor and Jones don't want to debate Manners whether the forum is organised by Manners or anyone else. They don't want to debate the hard issues.
