About Me
- Name: Concerned Ratepayer
- Location: Australia
For many years, the 4350water blog has informed readers of plans by the Toowoomba City Council (now Toowoomba Regional Council) and the Qld government to introduce recycled water for drinking in Toowoomba. It has also looked at the issue from a State and Federal perspective and dealt with related State and Federal political issues. There continues to be a need for the Toowoomba Regional Council to be completely transparent in its dealings with the ratepayers and residents of Toowoomba. There also continues to be a need for open debate on the benefits and risks of potable reuse and long-term studies on the effects on humans of drinking recycled water. Coal seam gas water is emerging as a possible alternate water source for some uses for the region. The 4350water blog is a collective effort and thanks go to its many contributors.

The Sydney Morning Herald is getting a bit carried away:
"TOMORROW: Sydney Morning Herald souvenir Sorry Day edition."
10:09 AM, February 13, 2008
The full apology:
"I give notice that, at the next sitting, I will move:
That today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.
We reflect on their past mistreatment.
We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.
The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.
We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.
We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.
For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.
To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.
And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.
We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.
For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.
We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.
A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.
A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.
A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.
A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.
A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia."

Now show us the money - activist
February 13, 2008
PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd's apology to the Stolen Generations was moving, but did not go far enough, an Aboriginal activist said today.
Speaking from the Aboriginal tent embassy outside federal parliament in Canberra today, Sam Watson said Mr Rudd's speech should be backed up by action, including compensation.

Anna brings on the crocodile tears on cue:
ABC News -
Bligh moved to tears over Stolen Generations apology
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh was moved to tears while talking about this morning's apology to the Stolen Generations.

Regardless of your views on saying sorry, surely this must be a goal - "A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity." On this the government is right.

Rudd staffers turned back on Nelson
February 13, 2008
TWO of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's staff will apologise to Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson after they turned their backs while listening to his speech today on the stolen generations.
Mr Rudd said in question time he had been informed that his media advisers Lachlan Harris and Tim Gleason had watched Dr Nelson's speech in the Great Hall of Parliament House.
"I'm further informed that at a time when a large part of the rest of the gathered throng in the Great Hall turned their back ... that the two members of my staff in question did so as well," Mr Rudd said.
Mr Rudd said his chief of staff had "counselled" the pair.
"I understand further that the two individuals, if they have not done so already, will be corresponding with the leader of the opposition to extend an appropriate apology."
