Bligh backs plan to ease water restrictions

Mon Feb 11, 2008

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has welcomed the Queensland Water Commission's approach to easing water restrictions in the south-east.

The Commission has released its plan for easing strict level six restrictions as dam levels rise.

The numbered system of restrictions will be replaced with categories of 'High' and 'Medium', which will apply when the dam totals reach 40 and 50 per cent.

When dams reach 40 per cent capacity, the daily water target will increase from the present 140 litres per person per day, to 170 litres. Residents will also be allowed to use their hoses for half-an-hour a week.

If the dams reach 50 per cent capacity, the target will be 200 litres per day and if they reach 60 per cent, the target will be 230 litres.

At 60 per cent, the restrictions will relaxed further, although there will still be 'Permanent Conservation Measures'.

Water commissioner Elizabeth Nosworthy says residents will still need to be responsible.

"Four-minute showers are still going to be very important and even though people will have the right to hose, don't hose unless you have to," she said.

Ms Bligh has applauded the plan, saying the 40 per cent trigger is very measured and cautious.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg says it is a good move to replace the current numbered restriction system with new categories of Extreme, High and Medium.

"I think that people do understand what's being done here, but what we've got to do is to make sure that we keep ahead of the action in the future," he said.

"[We need to ensure] that these sort of responses are proactively brought about by the Water Commission and not the Water Commission having to be dragged to this position of common-sense."

Courier Mail:

New deluge on the way

February 12, 2008

SOUTH-East Queensland's dams are continuing to fill as a new low promises to deliver heavy overnight falls.

With anticipation building Brisbane’s water supply could hit 40 per cent – and see the demise of Level 6 water restrictions – dam levels grew again overnight to 35.88 per cent, a rise of 0.2 per cent.

But heavy rain around the coast today has forecasters hopeful of an overnight deluge.

Rain this morning has brought up to 7mm of rain across parts of Brisbane but the system is set to move out to sea by late this morning.

However Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Geoff Doueal said two lows off the Queensland coast would merge later today and lead to another healthy downpour late this afternoon or early evening.
He said it was difficult to know how much of the rain would reach the dams.
