The Chronicle:

Hail, sleet send us scurrying
July 29, 2008

The cold snap yesterday brought snow, sleet, rain and hail to the Darling Downs with a chilly maximum of 8.2 degrees.

Most residents sheltered inside but Annabelle Currie, 5, knew she just had to play in it.

Toowoomba residents shivered yesterday between outbreaks of rain and hail on what was one of the coldest days of the year.

Snow was reported around Stanthorpe, Cabarlah, Cambooya and some areas of Toowoomba.

Toowoomba's temperature reached a maximum of just 8.2 degrees.

"In addition there was a significant cold upper low that was contributing to the instability in the air which caused the hail storms in the afternoon," Oakey Weather Station Senior Forecaster Jeff Hastings said.

Stanthorpe and Applethorpe recorded the lowest overnight minimum temperature in Queensland which was minus one degrees.

It hailed in Toowoomba's CBD and in Oakey about 1pm.

Annabelle Currie's parents Shaaron and John believed the icy covering of their yard was snow yesterday afternoon.

"Annabelle hasn't seen snow before. She'll have something to tell the kids at kindy," Mrs Currie said.

Cattle farmer Graham Barry from the Mount Tally, Eukey area, near Stanthorpe reported snow about 10.25am which fell for 30 minutes.

"We started to get some big snow flakes, some were bigger than ten cent pieces," he said.

He said it could snow up to eight times a year in Eukey but usually for just 15 to 30 seconds.

Samantha Drummond and her daughter Courtney from Cambooya also believed it was snowing first at 1pm for about 10 to 15 minutes and then for four minutes at 2.40pm.

"This is the first time in 16 years that it's snowed here," Mrs Drummond said.

It is forecast to be dry in Toowoomba today with early frost and cool south westerly winds, fresh and gusty at times and tomorrow is forecast to be dry with early frost.
