Excerpt from the Australian:
Kevin Rudd might empathise with working families over fuel prices, and express concern over climate change, but some of his colleagues have double standards when it comes to their choice of taxpayer-funded vehicles.
Through a little-known perk, federal departments often provide ministers and parliamentary secretaries with a private-plated car and fuel card for their use in Canberra, separate to any electorate or private vehicles they might have at home.

The Australian:
"If Rudd can be rattled by Nelson on petrol prices, just wait until emissions trading kicks in," the head of an industry association warned.
"Petrol has doubled in price since 1999 yet we are still driving around. If the Government is anxious about petrol now how will they react if electricity bills double and petrol increase by 17c a litre.

Since when have politicians of any persuasion refused to use public funded cars or fuel. They like the big cars as it makes them seem more important. The Australian public has been "had" about carbon emissions and global warming too. The world is not going to stop revolving. It is greedy governments and businessmen, particularly the banks, who are squeezing the people for every cent so that they can reward the shareholders and the CEO's, no matter about the families desperately trying to stay afloat.
