Toowoomba Regional Council 2008 election - Taylor camp in disarray over failure to read documents ...

Seems Mayoral hopeful Taylor doesn't read documents too closely.

If he had, he'd know that you don't give your opponents a free kick 21 days out from an election.

Taylor was caught on the back foot on WIN News trying to explain his failure to comply with the rules set down by the Transitional Committee he heads.

He then tried to blame his printer for the error, which implies he hasn't looked at his election ads.

Then he tried to say that the offending election ad was for information purposes only, not for political purposes.

But the ad states: Peter Taylor has the experience and vision to lead etc etc.

If it looks and reads like a candidate's election ad, it probably is one.

So he's not being too truthful there.

Sounds like an awful lot of duck and cover over the issue.

Toowoomba and the surrounding region needs leaders who will take responsibility for their actions - not people who will look to blame anyone and anything before accepting blame themselves.

There are already enough people like that in government.

The region needs a Mayor who will actually read Council documents ...

I do not see the issue here. Why are you bothering to beat this up? Short on decent policy to talk abou?

Slow news day you think?

It's quite simple, it goes to candidate credibility.

Either Taylor doesn't read the Transitional Committee paperwork he signs off on or he does and chooses to ignore it to further his career.

Either way, it's all bad news for Toowoomba and the region.

Do people want a part-time Mayor who isn't going to read the materials prepared for him before presiding over Council meetings to decide issues?

How dangerous is that?

The Council bureaucrats will feed him anything they want knowing he won't read it.

On the other hand, do voters want a Mayor who decides that the rules he signs off on don't apply to him?

Toowoomba has probably had enough of a Mayor using the position to try to further their own career and misguided mission. They don't need another so soon.

Then comes the issue of trying to deflect blame to anyone else.

It's a printer's mistake.

It wasn't election material - for information purposes not political?

Who was Taylor trying to fool with that rubbish?

It is clearly an election ad - just as any promotional material that says a particular candidate is the best person for the job is election material.

So in his flustered attempt to shed blame, he has misled the voters.

Do voters want a Mayor who will use any excuse to divert blame from poor Council decisions?

Probably not.

So it wasn't a good news day for Taylor.

Probably more than anything, it shows a very sloppy campaign team. If the simple use of a logo can knock the candidate off message, the candidate's team isn't up for the job.

It becomes a story about a candidate's incompetence and Cr Manners gets yet more free publicity.

Taylor should be booting his campaign manager and himself right now, not his printer.

I am the designer who used that logo on Peter Taylor's election flyer. When Peter Taylor talks about 'for information only, not political purposes' he is referring to the use of the logo, not the purpose of the flyer! The logo was used as a visual aid to impart factual information (the amalgamation of eight councils into one, united into a common entity, ergo, the logo). He ordered a reprint without any quibbles, and paid for both print runs. He also removed the logo from his website, yet I notice it is used on at least one other candidate's website without any barking coming from Manners about that. In my opinion, Manners' complaint shows him to be a petty, mean, nitpicker. Pity help Toowoomba Region residents if he ever gets into a position where he can bully or punish people he doesn't like.

The other candidate should also remove the logo from their website.

It's a joke to say that the logo was only for information purposes when it is on election material and the Committee expressly said it couldn't be used. It's just more excuses.

And does Taylor want praise now for simply doing what he should have done in the first place? Obviously he should pay - they're his campaign leaflets. No-one else is going to pay.

Anyone notice that PT has the I heart PT image on his website. Wasn't this the trademarked image that got Brisbane in trouble when New York threatened to sue???
