Nuttall in plea for legal help

14 December 2007

Former Queensland government minister Gordon Nuttall has put out an SOS for a retired lawyer to help him win his battle against corruption charges.

The former Beattie government minister is facing charges that he received $300,000 in secret commissions from Macarthur Coal's former chief executive Ken Talbot and $60,000 from WorkCover Queensland director Harold Shand.

Today his lawyers from the firm Carne Reidy Herd withdrew in a brief mention in the Brisbane Magistrate's Court.

Lawyer Sugath Wijedoru told the court the withdrawal had "nothing to do with the merits of the case" or the quality of legal representation.

He said it was an "internal" issue.

Nuttall told the court he had not organised other representation.

"No, I haven't - it's simply a matter of resources, it's as simple as that," he said, adding he may need to represent himself.

Another court mention has been set down for January 17 to deal with the issue.

Nuttall told reporters outside court he would welcome any help.

"I would ask any retired judge or barrister or solicitor out there who might want to give us a hand - I'd be only too happy to hear from them," he said.

He said he was very concerned about representing himself.

"I think I'm at a significant disadvantage in that regard," Nuttall said.

"I would dearly like to keep that team (of lawyers).
...

He would not be drawn on why he lacked the money for lawyers, but said he had already spent a "significant amount" and had paid his lawyers up to date.

Nuttall said he had not sought legal aid and did not believe he would be eligible in any case.

This should make for good theatre when Gordon gets to question his best mate Peter.

Who else would know him so well.
