[t]he Government is helping Toowoomba with an emergency bore-drilling program to tap the Great Artesian Basin.

The combined storage of Toowoomba’s three major dams is at less than 12 per cent.

Acting Natural Resources and Water Minister John Mickel said drilling to 530m would start near Cooby Dam, about 20km north of the city.

Sinking bores into the basin was the only viable option to provide extra water for Toowoomba in the short term, he said.
