Committee to explore "health implications" of recycled water
13 June 2007
An ACT government committee has been asked to look into the possible health implications of using recycled water for industrial purposes.
ACTEW has also been asked to examine the issue as the likelihood grows that stage four water restrictions will be introduced to Canberra next month.
"I want to know, as a matter of urgency, to what extent local industry might be able to rely on the water that now flows downstream from the Lower Molonglo Plant," chief minister Jon Stanhope said yesterday.
“I have asked the Interdepartment Committee to inform me of the health implications of using recycled water for a greater variety of industrial purposes, and what the potential might be for installing tank and pump systems to allow businesses to remain operational even through extended stage four restrictions."
"And of course I am keen to explore what industry itself can do to modify its practices and behaviours to adapt to water restrictions of this magnitude."
Mr Stanhope also said industry and sporting organisations needed to show that there were no obvious and viable alternatives open to them, and that they were willing to do what they could to implement water efficiency measures.
See - Industry to learn health risks first - Beattie says do it and ask questions later.
