Origin to install water purification plant near Roma
10 April 2007
Origin Energy has strengthened its stake in the state's southern inland by extending its coal seam gas operations.
The company will spend $50 million to drill 20 more wells at its Spring Gully site near Roma and install a reverse osmosis plant to purify water that is produced as a by-product.
The general manager, Tony Woods, says no decision has been made on what the water will be used for, but possible uses include adding to town water systems and agriculture.
"So we're keen to understand what would be the most valuable way to use that water in the area," Mr Woods said.
"There is a number of possibilities, one is to use that water for agriculture purposes locally and interestingly last year actually to test that we used the water we've been producing in a trial of the reverse osmosis, we've used that water to grow a barley crop."

Origin Energy Limited (Origin) today announced that it has committed to invest a further $53 million to expand coal seam gas (CSG) production from the Spring Gully CSG field by a further 20 terajoules per day as well as the construction of a reverse osmosis water treatment plant.
The reverse osmosis water treatment plant is being built to assist in managing the water that is produced as part of the process of recovering CSG. The decision to proceed follows a successful 6 month trial in which high quality water has been produced.
