Interestingly, the Report refers to desalination as a long term option but makes no reference to using recycled water for drinking. The point is raised in the Q&A section - probably didn't want to stir the pot on what is already the most contentious issue in the water debate.

Excerpt from SMH (annotated):

Mr Howard used the dire state of the Murray-Darling to pressure Victoria to sign his $10 billion water package.

"This is Australian water, it's an Australian problem and it's got to be solved at a national level and that can only happen if our plan is adopted," he said. [For some reason, it can't be solved by the States co-operating with the Federal government. It will ONLY work if there is a Federal takeover.]

"Without Victoria it won't work and if Victoria doesn't join, Victoria is holding up a national solution to our most critical conservation issue".

Minister Turnbull's comments:

"The plan can proceed without Victoria - it will be more cumbersome, it will not work as well and of course it will mean none of the $10 billion (in funding) or any part of that will be spent in Victoria," he said while in Brisbane for a meeting with state counterparts.

"It will be a very bitter blow to Victorian irrigators to see so much investment on the other side of the border."

Excerpt from ABC News:

Professor Cullen says groundwater from the Adelaide plains should be used more efficiently.

"I think Adelaide should be looking at a desalination plant and I really do think that you've got quite a good groundwater resource on the Adelaide plains and it's perhaps absolutely critical that you start regarding that as a potential source of water for Adelaide and stop using it just on race courses and golf courses," he said.
