Frustrated Flanagan to carry buckets of recycled water up the range ...

Unable to accept the fact that 61.8% of Toowoomba voters do not believe anything they say after the Water Futures debacle, Mayor Thorley and Mr Flanagan continue to stumble and bumble along.

The Interim Report of the Toowoomba Water Task Force will be discussed at this week's Council committee meetings.

See - Council committee meetings agenda - 6 and 7 February 2007 - page 127.

This report refers to the Wivenhoe link costing an estimated $95 million. But let's not discuss that, let's refer back to Premier Beattie's comments last year where he talked about spending maybe $100-200 million on the connection.

Having admitted to the Toowoomba community that the city will not run out of water (18 months of scare tactics just didn't work), there's an attempt to scare the community just one more time.

The agenda refers to it being "highly likely that from the end of 2008 Toowoomba could be receiving a component of Brisbane's purified recycled water through this proposed pipeline".

That's the pipeline that hasn't been built yet and most likely will not be built until after the Traveston Dam is completed in 2011 or so.

As usual, the despondent duo don't let the truth get in the way of their agenda, stating that their failed project could provide a bit over half the water that might be sourced from Brisbane (let's ignore that you can't get 6,500 ML of recycled water from 5,000 ML of sewage) and seeking approval to continue discussions with Beattie & Co.

Perhaps Mayor Thorley will have Mr Flanagan carry buckets of recycled water up the range at the end of next year just to prove that Toowoomba might drink recycled water at the end of 2008.

But that would be after the next Council election when there's sure to be a retirement or two down at City Hall ...

I'm concerned that this blog is set up my an anonymous Toowoomba ratepayer. My Toowoomba ratepaying days are gone, but they existed for over 30 years. My name is O. Langdale, I have a blog and a face and I don't post anonymously. If such a front for the anti recycling campaign is to have any credence at all, at least have the guts to actually own the site.

It is much better to see an anonymous person telling the truths rather then political figures telling lies!

I couldn't care less, frankly. It's just that such a clearly well researched argument from this person called 'waterboy' deserves to be claimed by a real person, not an anonymous Toowoomba Ratepayer. I'm really genuinely pleased to receive comment, and anonymity is permitted via this medium, it's just that you have gone to a lot of effort, you are computer-savvy, you are obviously passionate about your case, I really respect that. But we're not discussing or publishing porn here. Incidentally, if you really would like to highlight a mistake in water reticulation, look no further back than the 3 million Sydneysiders who had to boil town water for days when the conventional reticulation collection/treatment system 'failed'. My question to you is: do you think the government (local/state/federal) would for one minute entertain the notion of deliberately making the population of anywhere on continental Australia ill from such a scheme? If we encourage industry to rely less on the consumption of potable water (3 industries here in Brisbane alone consume massive amounts of clean drinking water daily, I think from memory 135 ML) we'll use what we've got smarter. It's a multi pronged attack. When I arrived in Toowoomba in November 1964 it was during what was then a major prolonged drought. My memory of the city is one of almost constantly having boom and bust weather-wise. Council's sale of treated water to Millmerran was very productive. We have to do lots more smartly with what is a limited resource. Topaz received 142mm on Sunday. Awesome! Well, it 'aint happening down here (more's the pity). We have to plan for the future and pray for imminent relief from arguably the worst drought in our recorded history.

(as posted on my blog today)

'greg', the earth is flat and the daylight saving does fade the curtains. Neither fact stated by a politician. Must be true?

'nice person', there may well be lots of new jobs and opportunities created that haven't been stated yet. I feel no shame, much like Malcolm Fraser did in 1975. I even like him nowadays, so there's hope for us all :)

As far as I can see Toowoomba was not in a prolonged drought during 1964!!! I was only three at the time but my info was derived from HERE and I have made a simple Visual Basic program from the data to show the yearly totals but I guess that data may be wrong. Perhaps the one reason not to let them put recycled effluent back into our dams. They may be wrong or they could be telling us lies! We need to be very careful who we believe and in the history of politics - well that speaks for itself!

rickyoz it's a great way to promote your blog, but you are late to the debate!

Well, the figures would be easier to read in graph form, there was a drought, I was 14 when I arrived in Toowoomba. My lateness in the debate is purely because as a non resident now I felt it was prudent to lobby my friends, plus I wasn't privvy to all the media (although what I heard made me fume some times). It even made BBC Birmingham where friends emailed to say the Mayor was on the radio being interviewed. Hot stuff! On the night of the referendum I was at a dinner party in Toowoomba and was amazed at the result, but issues in Toowoomba rarely make me too surprised. Today the debate is regional, I can join in.

For those interested in my blog, feel free to scan it for more interesting topics, like coping with the aftermath of that irrational war that President Shrub and his cronies commenced a few years ago. I deal with that every day. Water is vital, yes, but not my life. I lived in Holland recently for 18 months where they have too much water, but its use and control is paramount to the success and survival of that nation. We have to get smarter here too.

61.8% of Toowoomba voters would probably agree with 'niceperson'. Figure around the same number of SEQ residents saying the same.

p.s. the 4350water blog is not an 'anti recycling campaign'. The blog seeks to raise awareness of issues relating to drinking recycled water that the politicians and mainstream media may not raise (for whatever reason). With over 1,000 blog articles (and cartoons!) and over 43,000 page views (from late 2005), it seems to have a place in the debate.
