Grey water use overcomes legal obstacles ...

... except in Toowoomba.

From the Courier Mail:

1 March 2006

QUEENSLANDERS breaking the law by using shower or bath water on their gardens will no longer be criminals from today.

State Government laws will legalise the reuse of grey water for the first time, although residents will not be allowed to store the resource.

But Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said legalising grey water use in the state was a tricky issue and would be "one step forward and two steps back" for enthusiastic water savers because of the health risks involved and the prohibitive cost of grey water irrigation systems.

Grey water includes waste water from showers, baths, spas, hand basins, laundry tubs and washing machines, but not from toilets or kitchen sinks.

Cr Newman said the change would benefit the many people already using grey water from their showers or basins.

But he said the requirements and cost of installing underground grey water irrigation systems meant the technology would be too expensive for most owners of existing homes.
