First Council Committee meeting for 2006 ...

The Toowoomba City Council meets for the first time in '06 this week.

Not much in the agenda of interest to the water debate but let's see how long the Mayor and Deputy Mayor keep their cool when asked more searching questions about the controversial recycled sewage project.

Perhaps a good opening question is - why has the Council not told the public about its plans to use public money to build a $3 million CH2M Hill designed information centre as part of the proposal?

Or - how was the amount of $3 million determined? Has the Council any real idea of how much it would cost or has it just accepted the ballpark number given to it?

How about funding for an environmental, social and ecomic study on the effect of introducing recycled effluent into Toowoomba's domestic water supply.

People should ask who was paid $93000 in consulting fees last year?
It would seem that the councillors do not know either.
Maybe that could be asked at this meeting and we can all find out.

It would be good if the councillors asked for an engineering report which would tell us the truth as to when the water will run out . It would seem that 2 years ago they thought it would last for 8 years . Is this right or has something changed that we do not know about?

Waterwoe, I regret to inform you that water is a fluid thing. Therefore, predictions for how long it will last are hazy at best.

Based on climate data that assumes a certain amount of rainfall, certain temperatures, an average of the humidity in the air and an average of the water usage by citizens, while also having to take into consideration fluctuations in population, unforseen burst pipes and evaporation, is obviously not going to be an exact science.

If the life expectancy of our water supply changes, I wouldn't start assuming conspiracy is in the air!

Maybe they could discuss and justify why 3 councillors and 3 council employees need to go to Japan and waste valuable ratepayer money. The public of toowoomba need more accountable actions by our councillors. How much extra are these people wasting on food, drink etc.

They should be staying here in Toowoomba.

How about an open public forum by the Council with a commitment to actually answer questions about the project, the NWC application and any secret deals with the State government?
