Excerpt from ABC News:

Toowoomba flagpole to be 'iconic' symbol

24 October 2008

Toowoomba regional council Mayor Peter Taylor says a new flagpole will become an iconic marker of the city.

The Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine, will today present councillor Taylor with a cheque for $250,000 to build the 15-tonne, 45-metre flagpole at Picnic Point as part of the Q150 celebrations.

"On a 150-foot high flagpole which is symbolic in that next year we will be 150 years of Queensland," Cr Taylor said.

"So one foot in the old measurements, one foot for every year of Queensland."

He says it will be impressive sight when flags are flying.

"Sitting on top of the Great Dividing Range, the greatest city in Australia and it'll be very visible from all directions," he said.

See - Mayor Peter Taylor gets a huge one.

Could the $250,000 have been spent in a more productive way ...

Grant gives lift to city's new landmark flagpole

25 October 2008

TOOWOOMBA'S latest icon-in-the-making yesterday received a $250,000 boost.

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine inspected the site at Picnic Point where the 15-tonne, 45-metre tall flagpole will be erected.

He presented a cheque to Toowoomba Regional Council mayor Peter Taylor.

Funding for the flagpole is part of the Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Program.

Mr Shine believes the flagpole has the potential to be a massive tourism drawcard for Toowoomba.

“Like a beacon, the flagpole has the potential to draw increased attention from locals and visitors alike,” Mr Shine said.

Cr Taylor supported Mr Shine's thoughts and said the flagpole would be an outstanding landmark for the region.

“Picnic Point is a magical place and we'd like to see more people - visitors and locals - experience its beauty,” Cr Taylor said.

“You'd be hard-pressed to find a better vantage point for a flag anywhere in Queensland.”

What has Shine been smoking? Does he really think tourists will flock to Toowoomba to see a flag pole?
