ABC News:

Bligh searches for Cloncurry water solution

26 August 2008

Premier Anna Bligh says she hopes to find a solution to overcome the water shortage that is gripping Cloncurry in north-west Queensland.

Mayor Andrew Daniels says there is now less than 40 days of water left in the town's dam although bore water is being added to help extend the supply.

Councillor Daniels says untreated tap water in the town now is unfit for human consumption.

Ms Bligh says finding a solution could be tough.

"There is a lot of work occurring with relevant State Government departments and with the council at Cloncurry," she said.

"I will be holding a meeting this week with the local Member Betty Kiernan and relevant State Government agencies to pull that work together, so there are options being looked at, but there is no overnight solution.

"This is a very difficult circumstance for this council and I hope that we can resolve it quickly."
