Courier Mail:

Several Nationals MPs are also set to lose their seats with the scrapping Charters Towers, Darling Downs and Cunningham.

Nationals' Stuart Copeland and Ray Hopper are likely to face-off to contest the new seat of Dalby which encompasses part of their old seats of Cunningham and Darling Downs.

However, Mr Hopper could move to the neighbouring seat of Nanango which is currently held by Independent MP Dorothy Pratt.

Region's MPs forced to go head-to-head

May 24, 2008

TWO National Party Members of Parliament from the Toowoomba region were among the big losers in the proposed changes to state electoral boundaries released yesterday.

Stuart Copeland (Cunningham) and Ray Hopper (Darling Downs) will be without a seat after the two electorates were abolished to create a new seat of Dalby.

There have also been proposed minor boundary changes to Toowoomba South (held by National Mike Horan) and Toowoomba North (held by Attorney-General Kerry Shine).

The proposed new electorate will include Wyreema, Cambooya, Clifton, Greenmount, Pittsworth, Westbrook, Kingsthorpe, Oakey and Dalby, as well as Drayton.

The changes have been brought about by shifts in population across the state.

There will still be 89 seats with an average quota of 29,560 electors in each electorate, up from 24,769 in the 1999 redistribution.

The amalgamation of Cunningham and Darling Downs was caused by a below quota number of electors in each of the seats.

Mr Copeland said he intended to continue to represent the best interests of his constituents in Cunningham until the next election.

"I have no plans at the moment except to keep representing the people of Cunningham until the next election," Mr Copeland said.

He said his electorate office would continue to provide all assistance to residents of Cunningham until further advice was received from the Queensland Electoral Commission.

While Mr Copeland expected some interesting changes in boundaries, he said he was surprised by the extent of the changes.

"We knew there were some pretty big changes coming, but the extent was surprising," he said.

"But that is the nature of 8redistribution.

"You should expect the unexpected."

Member for Darling Downs Ray Hopper said it was disappointing to see his electorate cut in half.

"It is devastating to see Darling Downs cut in half," Mr Hopper said.

"I have formed some great relationships with my constituents but we are going to have to make this work."

Mr Hopper said it was up to the party whether he contested the proposed Dalby electorate, but he was adamant he would continue his 8political career.

"I am going back to Parliament," he said.

Toowoomba North's southern boundary will extend to the northern side of James Street (now Margaret Street) with some minor changes to the northern boundary at Highfields and to the eastern boundary.

Toowoomba South will start on the southern side of James Street (now Margaret Street) and will extend to the south to include the suburbs of Kearneys Spring, Middle Ridge and part of Darling Heights.

Former Darling Downs electorate centres Crows Nest, Cooyar, Bowenville, Geham, Goombungee, Hampton, Cabarlah, Meringandan and Quinalow will become part of the Nanango electorate, held by independent Member Dorothy Pratt.

Former Cunningham centres Millmerran and Cecil Plains will join the Southern Downs electorate.

The proposed changes will be open for public comment until Monday, June 23, with the final changes to the boundaries to be handed down on Friday, August 22.
