Toowoomba Regional Council 2008 election - failed candidate Meibusch nominates Anna's wish list for Council ...

Failed Labor candidate for Groom Chris Meibusch has issued a letter nominating what must be Anna Bligh's wish list for Mayor and Councillors for the Toowoomba Regional Council.

It is:

Mayoral candidate:

- Peter Taylor

and Councillor candidates:

- Paul Antonio
- Bill Cahill
- Sue Englart
- Annette Frizzell
- Michelle Schneider
- Darby McCarthy

See - Meibusch letter gaff part 1.

Also see - Meibusch letter gaff part 2.

One would be forgiven for thinking that this is the list of candidates that the Labor Party thinks will do Anna's bidding - the dream team who won't stand in the way of any State Labor plans.

Why else would Labor's failed candidate nominate the wish list?

The 'anyone but Snow Manners' is an interesting touch - it clearly shows that the Labor Party does not want a Mayor who will not be an instant pushover and not accept every decision dictated by the Laborites in Brisbane.

Two weeks out from the election, this is an extraordinary gaff by Meibusch and the whole Labor machine.

In all likelihood, the Meibusch list will become another How not to Vote list for voters - with Englart and Schneider appearing on both lists.

If any of these candidates does not want to appear as being on Anna's dream list, they need to distance themselves from it pretty quickly. (Post blognote - candidate Frizzell has done so.)

Time is running out ...

I have now crossed Paul Antonio off my list.

I personally would not support any candidates who have an affiliation with the Labor Party.

The word on the street is Snow Manners for Mayor - go Snow! You have my support!!!

The Chronicle:

Jones far from content

1 March 2008

UNSUCCESSFUL Labor Party candidate Chris Miebusch said the contents of a personal letter sent to "friends", which endorses a Toowoomba regional mayor and six candidates, have been blown out of proportion.

The Toowoomba solicitor said he had sent only six copies - which have had wider distribution - with another 550 to be sent to his friends, "most of whom" who had helped him in last year's campaign.

A copy of the letter was sent to returning officer Robyn Lowien, who referred it to her superiors in Brisbane.

Mr Miebusch said he tossed up between Ian Jones and Peter Taylor before opting for Cr Taylor.

After fending off claims his campaign had received $52,000 from the Australian Labor Party earlier this week, Cr Jones yesterday was up in arms about the perceived party politics in council.
"It was damaging to me. This recent development, however, makes it perfectly clear that all along the beneficiaries of the Labor Party's support have been Peter Taylor and six others."

Cr Taylor was the unsuccessful National Party candidate for the seat of Darling Downs in 2001.

Cr Jones said: "Regardless of whether it's financial or philosophical or both, Labor Party support is what it is."

Mr Miebusch said: "It's a private letter to my friends but I am keen to see solid regional representatives because I think it's our best chance of ensuring a strong regional council."

There was also unsolicited support for Millmerran Mayor Paul Antonio, Crows Nest's Bill Cahill, Toowoomba's Sue Englart and Michelle Schneider, Jondaryan councillor Annette Frizzell and former champion jockey Darby McCarthy.

Cr Frizzell has disassociated herself from the letter and reiterated her independence.

Cr Taylor did not respond to The Chronicle's call.

The problem for Jones and Taylor is voters may declare a plague on both their houses and opt for Manners. You have the Thorley annointed one who thought he had union and Labor party support for his bid to be Mayor locked up and now a late shift by Labor to the other guy leaving Jones twisting in the wind. No wonder he's not happy.

Jones doesn't even have time to campaign with him heading off to Bundaberg for business. How will he have time to be mayor??

I'd like to thank who ever it was who intitiated putting the Meibusch list here. I would never have found it otherwise.
From my understanding of the candidates, most of those on this list I see as having the strongest community values, the greatest commitment to the envirinoment and easily the most personable characters out there. Snow Manners is a whinger who is just full of hot air and not a single concept of his own. If he becomes Mayor I would seriously think about leaving my beloved Meringandan.
