Disgraced Mike Kaiser returns as Bligh chief-of-staff

6 December 2007

Disgraced ex-Queensland MP Mike Kaiser has quit a top job with the NSW Premier to take up the same position with Premier Anna Bligh.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma today said Mr Kaiser would finish working as chief of staff in his office at the end of the year.

Mr Kaiser was a Queensland Labor MP but resigned in 2001 after admitting to involvement in vote-rigging in party ballots in the 1980s.

He had told a Criminal Justice Commission inquiry that he signed a false declaration in 1986 when taking part in Labor Party branch stacking.

Although not charged with any offence, Mr Kaiser quit as the MP for the safe Labor seat of Woodridge and was stripped of his ALP membership.

Once again showing that you're never really out of politics unless you're found with a live boy or a dead girl ...

Kaiser is deserting a sinking ship. He knows Iemma's days are numbered. The rail tunnel disaster is the final straw.

In his tell-tale diaries, former federal Labor leader Mark Latham claimed Kaiser had already arranged a secret deal to reclaim Woodridge in 2010 after Ms Scott becomes eligible for a full parliamentary pension.

Well he is well set now and he has the endorsement of the Premier.
Hopefully by then the community will have opened their eyes and there will be a change of government!

Excerpt from Sydney Morning Herald:

Kaiser admits he is going, but 'not going there'

8 December 2007

MIKE KAISER was true to form. On Thursday night, the Herald rang Morris Iemma's controversial right-hand man and chief of staff to ask if the rumour he was going back to Queensland was true. "No," he said.

So there were no plans at any time in the future to return to Queensland? "No," he said.

At the time of the call, Mr Kaiser was in Brisbane on his way to meet Queensland's Premier, Anna Bligh, to seal the deal to be her chief of staff.

Yesterday, he offered the Herald an apology and a chat, provided he was not asked about issues such as Betfair. The Herald asked him anyway, but Mr Kaiser said he was "not going there".

His departure will do nothing to dampen speculation that Mr Iemma may step down mid-term.

The Premier has announced he will replace Mr Kaiser with 31-year-old Josh Murray, a former radio journalist who was chief of staff to his deputy, John Watkins, before he was made Mr Iemma's deputy chief of staff last year. Some in the Labor Party believe Mr Murray is being groomed for the day Mr Watkins replaces Mr Iemma in the top job.

Mr Kaiser has had a bumpy ride as chief of staff, being embroiled in issues such as who knew what when about the allegations against the former minister Milton Orkopoulos, the debacle over the proposed appointment to cabinet of Paul Gibson under a cloud of domestic violence allegations, the whistleblower Mark Aarons's redundancy over the same issue, and the Betfair lobbying affair.

All this followed Mr Kaiser's resignation as a Queensland Labor MP in 2001 after admitting to involvement in vote-rorting in the 1980s.

Asked yesterday why he attracted such controversy, Mr Kaiser said: "That's not my fault."
