Costello won the debate and some of the people.
He gave considered answers and he was seen in a new light.

Swan was very nervous in his opening address.

Both performed better than Howard and Rudd.

Swan's main tactic was to keep trotting out the line about the government promising to keep interest rates at 30 year lows (which they still are). Not all that effective in front of the National Press Club.

But Mr Howard had no doubt.

"I thought Mr Costello creamed him," Mr Howard said after watching about three-quarters of the nationally televised debate.

However, Mr Rudd said the "worm" – the Nine Network's monitor of audience response – gave the win to Mr Swan.

"I think the worm has a real problem with (a) Mr Costello and (b) Mr Costello's attitude to Work Choices," Mr Rudd told reporters.

But Mr Costello dismissed the worm, telling reporters later in Queanbeyan: "Managing the Australian economy is not done by worm, it takes policy and it takes experience."
