Toowoomba bypass promise
22 October 2007
The Coalition will today promise to deliver the long-awaited second crossing of the Toowoomba Range, with a $700 million federal funding commitment.
Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile is expected to announce funding for the project while campaigning on the Darling Downs this morning.
On the drawing board for 15 years, the planned road would bypass Toowoomba, taking trucks away from busy urban streets.
It would also allow motorists travelling between the Darling Downs and Brisbane to avoid the existing steep and winding range crossing – a section of road with an accident rate four times that of the rest of the Warrego Highway.
It is understood the proposed 42km bypass would take traffic off the Warrego Highway at Helidon Spa in the east, linking up with the Gore Highway near Westbrook Creek on the western side of Toowoomba.
It would include two 735m tunnels at the top of the range, each carrying one-way traffic, with a 200m long viaduct on the eastern approach to the tunnels.
...
[It] is understood the Government is not at this stage planning to make the new Toowoomba range crossing a toll road or to seek any private funding for it, although it could require a contribution from the State Government.

Mcfarlane must feel under threat!!
Watch Thorley take credit for it and if that was so it should have been given the OK a long time ago.
It proves that she had no influence at any time and only now that Howard wants all the votes he can get we see it promised.
I hope we all live long enough to see our city back to a peaceful place it used to be. All we need now is to see a few thousand people go back to where they came.

Watching the news to-day, one can see that Thorley had no influemce on getting the range crossing money.
Watching Anna Bligh also on the same news one was left to wonder what debt this State is in as she is not giving any money to the project.

Bligh will not fund Toowoomba bypass
22 October 2007
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has rubbished an announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile to build a $1.9 billion road west of Brisbane.
...
He called on the Queensland government to help fund half of the project.
Ms Bligh said she would work with the government but the road was clearly a federal government responsibility and no state money would be pledged.
"I will not be funding, as the Queensland premier, the defence force of Australia, I won't be funding the quarantine facilities of Australia, I have my responsibilities cut out for me running those things that our state is responsible for ... we will not be funding Commonwealth responsibilities," she told reporters in Brisbane.

The reason Anna will give nothing is because - except for Toowoomba North the rest of the seats in the State Parliament are held by conservatives - there is no point in "wasting " money when you know that it will not swing a result.
As for that bloke Meibusch or whatever - he should be kicked hard and long away with the rest of the Labor orientated followers -they have no creativity - just follow on the skirts of the government - try to find one thing unpopular - because the government took the hard decisions - and try and get back into power over that.
The government introduced GST - under virulent protest - now it is not even mentioned - the States cannot believe their revenues.
Coalition offers choice - Labor will just do it regardless

Thorley - It's a wonder that she is around to make a comment - she spends most of her time painting her pub in the Huon Valley in Tasmania - maybe it is a recording from there. She must have an amazing amount of Frequent Flyer points

Mr Macfarlane denied the announcement was timed to coincide with a pre-election vote grab.
"I haven't done this for the votes," he said. "I've been working on this for nine years. This is why I got into politics; to get things done."
