About Me
- Name: Concerned Ratepayer
- Location: Australia
For many years, the 4350water blog has informed readers of plans by the Toowoomba City Council (now Toowoomba Regional Council) and the Qld government to introduce recycled water for drinking in Toowoomba. It has also looked at the issue from a State and Federal perspective and dealt with related State and Federal political issues. There continues to be a need for the Toowoomba Regional Council to be completely transparent in its dealings with the ratepayers and residents of Toowoomba. There also continues to be a need for open debate on the benefits and risks of potable reuse and long-term studies on the effects on humans of drinking recycled water. Coal seam gas water is emerging as a possible alternate water source for some uses for the region. The 4350water blog is a collective effort and thanks go to its many contributors.

We can't survive on recycling
29 January 2007
The controversial introduction of recycled water will not save southeast Queensland from running dry.
Water Commission documents reveal there will not be enough water to meet projected demand as early as 2009.
That is despite the Beattie Government's move yesterday to top up the region's supplies with recycled water, and the billions of dollars in new pipelines, desalination plants and bores already being constructed.
Based on Water Commission documents, the region could be left short about 230 million litres a day.

29 January 2007
South Australian Premier Mike Rann and NSW Premier Morris Iemma, who faces an election in two months, rejected the Queensland plan.
Mr Rann ruled out using recycled sewage for anything but irrigation, saying he would prefer desalination.
"It will be interesting to see whether (Mr Howard's water reforms) includes plans to give billions of litres of pristine river water to the Liberals' friends in the cotton and rice industries whilst asking households downstream to drink treated sewage," he said.

Rein in industry's use of clean water or make your voters drink recycled water. That's the choice of the government.

Calls for recycled water education campaign
30 January 2007
Commerce Queensland is calling on the State Government to fund an education campaign about recycled water for interstate and overseas business.
Regional chairman Ken Murphy says food industries in Toowoomba were warned by customers against using recycled water when the town was polled on the issue last year.
Mr Murphy says the State Government needs to educate interstate and overseas consumers and businesses about recycled water.
"During the Toowoomba debate, Toowoomba food businesses were given ultimatums by their overseas customers and interstate customers that if they were using recycled water, that the customers would no longer be buy their products off them," he said.
